How to implement Google Adsense Section Targetting
I have noticed that my Google Adsense Targeted Ads were sometimes not as well targeted as they could be. So I set out in search of a way of making them more relevant to the content on my blog pages.
My searching turned up the following article in the Google Adsense Help Center. The article describes the process of section targeting to obtain more relevant ads for your web page. The idea is that you include special HTML comments to guide Adsense in what content on your web page is important. The tags are as follows:
You should place the tag at the start of the main content of your web page (ie. after any menu or sidebar HTML code). Then, at the end of the main content you place the tag. These tags can be used multiple times in the one page.
In addition, if there is a section of a page you would like ignored by adsense (a sidebar for example), you can add the qualifier (weight=ignore) to the start tag to mark the section. The tag would be as follows:
Mark the end of the section with the normal tag.
Apparently it can take 2 weeks for these changes to become apparent in the ads displayed on your website, so some patience is required.
I have implemented the Adsense Section Targeting code on my blog and I will monitor the result. Getting the tags to be generated using the blogger platform was quite a trial. Leave me a comment if you need info on how to do it. I will post the results (if any) when I see them.
10 Ways to Monetize Your Blog
I’m co-leading a discussion session at Wordcamp about Monetizing Blogs, so I thought I’d also touch on it here with a post about 10 Ways to Monetize Your Blog.
First, I should preface this discussion by saying you first need to seriously evaluate whether you want to work at monetizing your blog. Steve Pavlina has a very thorough post that goes over what’s necessary to really do this well, and why the majority of people who try end up not generating significant income.
Second, you have to make sure that making money from your blog directly is your goal. For example, for this blog direct income isn’t my goal. I didn’t have ads at all untli recently, and the only reason I added them was to use the ad network management application I’ve been working on called RMX Direct. It’s quite possible that your blogging goals may just to network, write about something you’re interested in, or serve some business purpose that isn’t direct income generation.
With that out of the way, let’s get started:
1. Contextual Advertising
Surprise, surprise. Advertising is easily the most popular blog monetization tactic, mostly due to it being the easiest thing to implement. Advertising comes in many forms, and contextual advertising is the most popular due to Google Adsense and it’s general success with blogs and niche sites.
I’m going to assume everyone reading this is familiar with it, but I think it should be mentioned that too many bloggers assume that Adsense is the best solution for their blog. For some blogs and topics it works great, for others, not very well at all.
My advice is to not limit your blog to one ad network or just one form of advertising. Other contextual options include the Yahoo Publisher Network, Chitika, Clicksor, AdSonar, and others. It’s not easy to manually test all these though if you’re shuffling ad tags around and randomly allocating your impressions to them, using a ad network management tool like RMX Direct can help you manage, evaluate, and control your various ad networks.
2. Display Advertising
As I mentioned above, contextual networks aren’t always the best solution for blogs. In some cases there aren’t enough advertisers in niche topics, and in others the users just isn’t likely to click. In this case, you want to be working with ad networks that provide CPM display advertising. This means you get paid something for every ad viewed, opposed to only getting paid per click.
Just like with contextual networks, it’s important to use multiple display ad networks to get more variety from your ads, to not let any one network control your inventory, and to make sure you’re earning the most amount of money possible.
3. Targeted Advertising
The most desirable form of advertising is having companies that wish to pay good rates to advertise on your blog directly whether it’s text or image ads. Many bloggers feel that this is a pipe dream, but I speak from experience from running a wakeboarding blog for many years that you can make solid income from targeted advertising without having insane amounts of traffic.
There are a number of key things you have to do though in order to get this type of advertising:
* Have a blog with leading content in your niche and a professional design
* Create a “media kit” which is essentially a page on your blog that explains that you take targeted advertising, what your rates are, demographics of your users, your traffic levels, examples of the types of ads people can run, testimonials from any companies that have advertised with you, and a phone number and email address they can use to get more information.
* Have obvious “Advertise On This Blog” links in key places on your blog.
* Give a company or two in your niche free or very low-cost advertising in order to get the ball rolling. When advertisers see their competitors or companies similar to them advertising, they get the idea that it’s available. If all they ever see is Adsense ads, they might not realize it’s an option.
* Be willing to be creative to help your advertisers achieve their goals, and lower your price to get the deals.
* Provide statistics and results to your advertisers. Use an ad server like RMX Direct, phpAdsNew, or something similar which has the ability to create reports per advertiser.
Once you’ve set your blog up properly, start approaching companies in your niche who will want to reach your traffic. You don’t need to go after the biggest companies, there are many small companies who are looking to get better results from the web, and they might not even know about your blog. You don’t need to be an ad sales professional, you just need to present your case well on why they’re missing out if they don’t advertise on your traffic. Make it easy on them to work with you, help them create ads, help them determine what sizes to use, and work with them to make sure they get the results they need. It seems like hard work at first, but after you get a solid base of advertisers going, it’s a great source of income and it starts to streamline.
4. Text Link Advertising
Another somewhat unobtrusive form of advertising is using services like Text Link Ads or Adbrite to sell text ads directly to companies. This is pretty low effort and often doesn’t take up too much space on a site, so it’s easy to implement and try out. It should be noted though that you need significant traffic for it to be a big source of income.
5. Affiliate Links
One of the older web monetization methods is still as good today as it’s always been. If you’ve got a blog in a specific area, there’s a very large chance that there are companies out there that sell products or services your users are interested in. You can earn some nice income recommending or linking to those products.
Amazon.com is probably the most common affiliate merchant used by bloggers, but I’d advise finding other unique merchants who may pay better and be more specific to your topic. Amazon is always there as an option, but you’re more likely to get more help from the merchant if you go with a smaller company.
Another nice thing about affiliate links is that they fit well with quality content. Reviewing products and services for your users is valuable content, and if you can make money off it as well it’s a great combination. A word of warning though that you shouldn’t change your reviews or be biased due to the fact you can make money off a referral.
While traffic also helps for affiliate links, it can sometimes be an easier way to generate income without high traffic levels like advertising requires. As an example I did a review of a web analytics application a couple of years ago, and this blog had very little traffic at that point. I referred two sales through that review though that still earn me $150 a month every month two years later.
6. Selling Your Content (Ebooks, Videos, DVDs)
If you’ve got great content, another option is to package it and sell it. There are numerous bloggers who have created ebooks and even real books based on their blog content and made great income selling them. You can also expand to infoproducts like videos, DVDs, audio CDs, and printed books on demand.
This can take some significant work and it requires great content to actually sell, but it can be a nice income stream that lasts a long time.
7. Consulting
Depending on your topic and your level of expertise, you can sell consulting services. If you’re a web analytics expert, you could offer web analytics consulting services on your blog for an hourly fee. This takes very little work to setup beyond creating a page outlining your services, getting a standard contract, and having a way to take payments from companies. Again though, it just takes a little bit of effort to let people know that consulting services are available.
8. Donations
Not quite as common as it once was, it used to be fairly common for bloggers to ask for donations on their blog through Paypal or some other service. This only works if you have a dedicated userbase, and a large enough number of users that their donations add up. I wouldn’t recommend this if you’re also putting a lot of advertising and other monetization methods on your blog. You’ll come off as a bit too greedy in that case.
9. Selling Products
Besides infoproducts, you can sell real products like t-shirts, bumper stickers, clothing, or whatever other kind of merchandise makes sense for your topic. Companies like Goodstorm, CafePress, Lulu, and others make it easy by creating the products based on your design and letting you set up a shop. There is no risk to bloggers, which makes it a great opportunity.
10. Selling Your Blog
Perhaps the most extreme of the blog monetization methods, but it can be lucrative! If you aren’t attached to your blog and are willing to part with it, you can usually find a buyer for it. Your blog must be pretty good, and have a level of traffic worth buying, and it really helps if you already have some income streams going for it. Blogs usually sell for 12-24 times monthly revenues, and there are numerous places you can sell them like eBay and the Sitepoint Marketplace.
Conclusion
It definitely takes some work to monetize your site well, and having good traffic really helps out. Work on building a blog with a solid userbase, and you should be on your way to generating income using any of the methods above. Good luck, and please share any blog monetization experiences you have in the comments.
Update: I was pointed to a similar post by Darren Rowse at Problogger.net that is also a recommended read on the subject of making money from your blog. He mentions many of the same things, and has a couple I didn’t mention as well.
StumbleUpon, boost your traffic
StumbleUpon is a web browser plugin that allows its users to discover and rate webpages, photos, videos, and news articles. These webpages are typically presented when the user who is known as a stumbler within the Stumbleupon community clicks the "Stumble!" button on the browser's toolbar. StumbleUpon chooses which new webpage to display based on the user's ratings of previous pages, ratings by his/her friends, and by the ratings of users with similar interests. i.e. it is a recommendation system which uses peer and social networking principles.
StumbleUpon is the best way to boost your traffic. Just it needs to discover your page , and to take some stumbles (thumbs up). Remember that discovering a spam webpages leads to ban. So if you want to boost your traffic you must do follow things :
1. Make friends in StumbleUpon.
It`s better to have more friends, because when you discover a page, your friends are noticed and they may come to the page and stumble it. More friends = more possible votes = more traffic, that you will receive. My StumbleUpon account is BorosBG , feel free to add me as friend, and i will add you too. Also post your StumbleUpon account in comments, to may other people add you as friend.
2. Make Stumble Exchanges.
Although this violate TOS of StumbleUpon, many people makes stumble exchanges. Stumble exchange is when you stumble some link, and in return you get stumble for your link. Every thumbs up is a link to your page. This means that more stumbles you get = more links to your page, and better place in search engines.
Here is some places where you may make stumble exchanges :

How To Monetize Blogger Blogs
How Can You Monetize Your Blogspot Blog?
What options do you have if you want to monetize Blogger blogs? I know Blogger is not considered a serious money making blog platform by some Wordpress users, but it does have its advantages. It’s free and it’s easy to use. But the downside is that you are at the mercy of Google. They can change the terms and conditions and even the platform itself whenever they like. Also, if you manage to build a successful blogger blog, you can’t really sell it.
There are plenty of monetization strategies available for Blogger. It’s really just a matter of finding out what will work for you. If you receive a lot of search engine traffic then contextual ad programs like Google’s Adsense can be a good option. However if you have a lot of repeat visitors and regular readers, you may need to explore other options. Here some of the more common ways to monetize Blogger blogs.
Adsense.
Adsense is probably one of the easiest ways to monetize a blogspot blog, at least in terms of setup and maintenance. Blogger provides a widget where you can enter your Adsense account details and choose the ad format. You can then position the Adsense widget wherever you like using “Add and Arrange Page Elements” on the Blogger user interface. There is even an option to display Adsense ads between posts.
There is still limited flexibility when using the Adsense widget though. You can’t position the ads inside of your posts. However, if you are comfortable with HTML and CSS you can position your ads by editing the Blogger template. You can also show different sets of ads on post pages to what is on the home page. For example, you might want to position ads between posts on the main page, but inside the post on post pages.
I wont go into the details of how to do that here. I’ve managed to display Adsense ads most place I’ve needed to using a blogspot blog so let me know if you need some pointers.
Other Ad Networks.
Most of the other ad networks I’ve tried or looked at will support blogspot blogs. As long as they provide javascript or HTML code to display the ads, you can use Javascript/HTML widget to position them on your Blogger blog. You will face the same limitations as with the Adsense widget, but you can still work around these by editing your template directly.
Something I should have mentioned earlier about positioning of javascript code in a blogspot template, is blogger’s treatment of comments.
Anywhere in the ad network’s javascript code you see:
you will need to replace it with
This will allow you to insert the javascript directly into the template. Once again, let me know if you have issues with this and I’ll see if I can help you out.
One other thing to be aware of with ad networks is that some have minimum requirements. This could be the content of your blog or the traffic it receives. I know TTZ Media for example doesn’t allow free sites - you need to have your own domain name. But there are plenty of other programs out there. You just need to find one which suits your niche.
Affiliate Programs.
There are literally thousands of affiliate products you can sell on your blogger blog. The technical aspects of displaying your affiliate ads are the same as for what I described in the Other Ad Networks section above.
As to what affiliate programs to use, Amazon Associates, Commission Junction and Click Bank are a few that come to mind. You should be able to find a product that will appeal to your audience in those programs.
Sell Advertising Directly.
Once you get a larger readership, as measured by page views, subscriber count or whatever, you should be able to sell ads directly on your blog. You can start by approaching advertisers who sell products in your niche - particularly those who advertise on other blogs in your niche. This may end up being a little more work particularly if you continually need to look for new advertisers frequently.
Other Ideas.
Getting paid to write reviews is another option you may want to look at. You just need to be aware of the penalty Google has been applying to blogs who have been writing these types of posts without including a nofollow on the link. If you rely on traffic from Google, sponsored reviews are probably not your best option.
So there are plenty of options available for you to monetize blogger blogs. While the technical aspects of displaying ads and affiliate links may be different, the challenge of monetizing your blog remains the same. Try different things. See what works for you. A lot will depend on your niche and the type of traffic you receive as to what the best way to monetize blogspot blogs will be.
Affirm Your Way to Self-Motivation and Success!
by Paul J. Meyer
The first step toward success is self-motivation. What is the best way to find your inner motivation? Decide on your goal and believe it can be yours. You might be thinking, "Well, that's easier said than done." The key is to become self-motivated and to believe. Using positive affirmations is the most effective way of developing motivation and becoming empowered for success. In effect, your affirmations become self-fulfilling prophecies.
Affirmations are also called self-talk, self-suggestions, attitude control, personal reminders, or simply talking to yourself. Affirmations are essential in building attitudes and confidence in our own capabilities by reminding ourselves of what we can become.
An example of an affirmation is, "I am the top salesman." This statement has all the key ingredients of a positive affirmation. An affirmation is defined as:
· A positive declaration or statement about yourself.
· In the first person and the present tense ("I am…")
· It is specific and about what you want to be (to have, or to do, etc.)
#1 - Replace the Negative with the Positive
Imagine a seesaw: one end of the board is loaded with the negative responses and the other is weighted with positive ideas. Your goal should be to always have positive side outweigh the negative. Using affirmations is key in developing the self-motivation that can turn your goals and dreams into realities.
For whatever reason, it seems that society, family, and friends often have a natural negative slant. Consequently, this negative thinking has adversely impacted our attitudes. Winners are positive thinkers. So, replace the negative with the positive for success!
The moment you begin to use positive affirmations, you gradually begin to shift the weight in a positive direction, first balancing the seesaw, and then tipping it in your favor. By choosing to use affirmations, the Law of Displacement reverses the imbalance. What you do not want has been outweighed by what you do want.
#2 -Affirmations Can Change Your Thinking
Your mind, both its conscious and unconscious parts, plays a role in the formation, use, and result of affirmations. Your conscious mind creates and uses the affirmations, but it is the unconscious mind that is going through the change. What is important to understand is that your unconscious mind cannot distinguish between fact and fiction.
In short, your mind believes what you tell it. This is where using affirmations can make all the difference. Through positive affirmations gradually your behavior responds, following what your unconscious mind has accepted. You become the person you have affirmed yourself to be.
#3 -Creating Your Own Affirmations
Now that you understand why affirmations are so powerful, and how winners use self-motivation to their personal advantage, it is time to create your own affirmations. First ask yourself this: "What do I really want?" Your answer becomes the foundation for creating your affirmation. For example, an objective could be: "I want to use my time more profitably by making 20 percent more sales presentations each week."
With your answer in mind, create an affirmation. The affirmation must be a positive statement about your self, written in the first person and present tense. Be specific about what you want to be, to do, to have, and so forth. Writing your affirmations down on paper helps keep you on track and provides you with a concrete, tangible goal toward which you are aiming.
#4 -Visualize and Repeat, Over and Over
Visualize your affirmation. If your affirmation were, "I am the top salesman," picture in your mind what that would be like. How does it feel to be the top salesman, how do you act and react in that role? When you can mentally see yourself already doing or being whatever you affirm, you are already on the road to success.
If you can describe it, then you can see it. If you can see it, then you can achieve it. Get ready, get set … repeat! You can change habits, attitudes, and personality characteristics through repetition of your positive affirmations. Read and re-read your new affirmations so that they reinforce the habits and attitudes you wish to develop.
Remember, affirmations are never a substitute for action and they require patience. Affirmations are a tool to help you become self-motivated, believe in yourself and gain confidence. On your mark … get ready, get set, and get motivated for success with affirmations!

Entrepreneurship
Entrepreneurship is the practice of starting new organizations or revitalizing mature organizations, particularly new businesses generally in response to identified opportunities. Entrepreneurship is often a difficult undertaking, as a vast majority of new businesses fail. Entrepreneurial activities are substantially different depending on the type of organization that is being started. Entrepreneurship ranges in scale from solo projects (even involving the entrepreneur only part-time) to major undertakings creating many job opportunities. Many "high-profile" entrepreneurial ventures seek venture capital or angel funding in order to raise capital to build the business. Angel investors generally seek returns of 20-30% and more extensive involvement in the business.[1] Many kinds of organizations now exist to support would-be entrepreneurs, including specialized government agencies, business incubators, science parks, and some NGOs.
Characteristics of entrepreneurship
* The entrepreneur has an enthusiastic vision, the driving force of an enterprise.
* The entrepreneur's vision is usually supported by an interlocked collection of specific ideas not available to the marketplace.
* The overall blueprint to realize the vision is clear, however details may be incomplete, flexible, and evolving.
* The entrepreneur promotes the vision with enthusiastic passion.
* With persistence and determination, the entrepreneur develops strategies to change the vision into reality.
* The entrepreneur takes the initial responsibility to cause a vision to become a success.
* Entrepreneurs take prudent risks. They assess costs, market/customer needs and persuade others to join and help.
* An entrepreneur is usually a positive thinker and a decision maker.
